The newest flock at Koigu is the Koigu Origins yarn line, which takes us back the true roots of our brand and business. In 1992, when Koigu was first established by mother/daughter duo Maie and Taiu Landra, they had already spent many years working with wool. Maie up to this point had transitioned from her pen and ink paintings to tapestries and knitwear designs which originated from the families flock of sheep, all hand spun and dyed. Taiu, just finishing her schooling in agriculture business, spent many years in the barn with sheep, participating in 4H shows, and educating youth at the Royal Winter Fair on the benefits of wool. Its readily apparent that their love for the animal, and wool was unwavering, and following years of small craft shows, they began to develop yarn, so that others could knit Maies designs. Fast forward to present day, this passion has not changed, as Maie and Taiu always search for the best dye and materials for Koigu. That is not to say there aren’t road blocks, as there always is for any small business. We continue to adapt and work as a family. Koigu Origins, is a line that reminds of the beginning of Koigu, and with that a focus on breeds, quality, education and the story.

The Masham sheep is a cross between the Teeswater (or Wensleydale) and Northern Hill (Swaledale or Dalesbred). Masham originated in Northern England, and have a particular love for the hills. The Masham sheep is noted for its motherly instincts and longevity as a sheep. You can distinguish a Masham sheep from others by their black and white faces, as well as their long wool Its wool is recognized as being soft and having a long fleece, at a 33.5-35 micron. For more information on Masham sheep, and British wool in general visit Britishwool.org, where they also have a fantastic free book on British wools.
